THE HANGOVER REPORT – Off-Broadway’s DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS is a rambunctiously campy send-up of Bram Stoker’s original

Over at New World Stages, you’ll find the Off-Broadway production of Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, which arrives in New York just in time for the Halloween season. Written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen, the show is essentially a send-up of Dracula, Bram Stoker’s ever popular horror tale.

As is usually the case with these types of spoofs, there’s nary a serious bone in Greenberg and Rosen’s rambunctious, very funny comedy. Indeed, Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors is pure entertainment, no more, no less. The show has a firm grasp of its target audience, and it consistently delivers the comic goods to them in rapid fire manner – namely in the form of queer friendly, camp-it-up jokes and visual gags (to paraphrase from the play, the show’s venue is located in Hell’s Kitchen, after all). As directed by Greenberg, the production is polished and smartly appointed. Although the staging is deceptively simple, it never feels cheap nor underbaked.

As for the game, hardworking cast, they’re wonderful across the board, striking comic gold again and again. Particularly hilarious and expert in various roles, however, are Ellen Harvey and the great Arnie Burton. In the title role, James Daly is perfectly cast, giving the role a sexy, punk rocker vibe that seduces no matter which team you bat for.
