THE NOTEBOOK (6/20/14): Gate’s “Grounded” at Studio

Gate’s “Grounded” at Studio

Last night, I caught the Gate Theatre’s (an excellent Fringe theatre in London) rare transfer of the brief but heavy-hitting solo show “Grounded” by George Brant at the Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. Lucy Ellinson’s elemental performance is the main reason to see this effectively claustrophobic production. Despite her character’s unique situation (a female drone fighter pilot who is also a wife and mom), Ms. Ellinson is fiercely the contemporary Everyman, clawing with her entire being to stay buoyant in a world that slowly chips away at and mutes her. A vital performance, and one to remember.
