THE HANGOVER REPORT – Staceyann Chin lights up the stage in her MOTHERSTRUCK!

15MOTHERSTRUCKSUB-master675Last night, I was happy to be able to squeeze in Staceyann Chin’s touching and dynamic solo show MotherStruck! at the Lynn Redgrave Theater before it closes this weekend. This was my first introduction to Ms. Chin, and she’s the real deal – a charismatic performer and skilled writer with real stage presence. The show, which chronicles her labyrinthine path to motherhood and beyond as a cash-strapped lesbian poet and activist, was a joy to experience. The engaged audience embraced Ms. Chin (thanks in part to Cynthia Nixon’s smooth, enveloping direction) as she recounted her many trials and tribulations and celebrated with her whenever she shared with us rare moments of revelation and jubilation. It’s to Ms. Chin’s great credit as a performer and writer (there’s actually quite a bit of lovely imagery in the play) that none of the anger and vulnerability in the piece – and there’s lots of it – got neither monotonous nor didactic.

There are some iconic names attached to this show; Rosie O’Donnell is listed as a producer and the direction is, as mentioned, by none other than Ms. Nixon. But make no mistake about it, this is most certainly the astounding Ms. Chin’s show. There are only a few more performances left until the end of the run. I encourage you to pay a visit.
