THE HANGOVER REPORT – Maurice Hines’ TAPPIN’ THRU LIFE is a whole lotta exuberant fun

Much fun is to be had at Maurice Hines’ exuberant Tappin’ Thru Life, which I caught yesterday afternoon at New World Stages. In this musical memoir, the charismatic Mr. Hines tells the story of his family and career through amusing banter, in addition to a string of indestructible Broadway and jazz standards (Frank Loesser’s “Luck Be a Lady”, Duke Ellington’s “Caravan”, just to name a few), all of which he performs with infectious enthusiasm. And even if Mr. Hines chooses to gloss over some of his more painful and difficult experiences – I, for one, would have loved to learn more about his complicated relationship with his brother, the late, great Gregory Hines – his memoir is still hugely satisfying. That’s because Mr. Hines is a consummate performer of the first order. His is a magnetic stage presence; you can’t help but smile and gladly take whatever he gives you. Certainly, they don’t make ‘em like Maurice Hines anymore
Mr. Hines is given solid support from his production team. Tappin’ Thru Life is directed with a sure hand by Jeff Calhoun to a slick shine. The sizzling musical accompaniment is provided by the outstanding all-female Diva Jazz Orchestra, who deserve a show all their own. Mr. Hines is also joined onstage by the next generation of tappers, as represented by the very talented Manzari Brothers and Ruth Sisters.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
