THE HANGOVER REPORT – David Lindsay-Abaire’s RIPCORD delights and warms the heart

Ripcord, David Lindsay-Abaire’s latest, is a warm-hearted comedy that’s receiving a delightful production via Manhattan Theatre Club. Although it doesn’t carry quite the same emotional punch as his Good People or Rabbit Hole, Ripcord stands its ground as a deft proclamation that life can still be colorful for the aged (much like Broadway’s current revival of The Gin Game). Set in an assisted living facility, Mr. Lindsay-Abaire’s play tells the often hilarious story of the increasingly high stakes battles between two roommates, Marilyn (Marylouise Burke) and Abby (Holland Taylor).
The cast, led by Ms. Burke and Ms. Taylor, is exceptional. Ms. Burke, in particular, is giving a memorable performance that’s disarming for its vivacity and generosity of spirit. Ms. Taylor, as her cantankerous rival, gives a slow-burning performance that pays off tremendously in the second act. The rest of the cast can’t be bettered – both Nate Mills and Ratchel Dratch, as the caretaker and Marilyn’s daughter, respectively, are delightfully spot-on.
David Hyde Peirce’s direction is well-judged and features some rather funny sight gags. His scenic designer, Alexander Dodge, has created a set that smoothly transitions between retirement home and various other (unexpected) locales.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
