With Halloween fast approaching, what better way to immerse yourself in the ghostly holiday than by attending a live performance to tickle ghoul within? Luckily, New Yorkers have a slew of options for such Halloween treats — across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and beyond — to sink their teeth into.
BROADWAY
- Death Becomes Her (Lunt-Fontanne Theatre) — The campy Tony-nominated musical adaptation, starring the irresistible duo of Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, continues to delight audiences at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
- Beetlejuice (Palace Theatre) — The visually lavish film-to-stage adaptation of Tim Burton’s creepy classic returns to the Great White Way at the Palace Theatre this October for a limited run. Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!
OFF-BROADWAY
- Bat Boy: The Musical (New York City Center) — In a fascinating choice, New York City Center has chosen Laurence O’Keefe’s cult Off-Broadway musical for its annual gala production, and what a cast it has lined up for us.
- Exorcistic (Asylum NYC) — The outrageous musical parody of the 1973 horror flick continues on at Asylum NYC, starring an unhinged Emma Hunton.
- Theater in Quarantine: Phantom of the Opera (NYU Skirball) — If you would rather stay in, the ingenious folks at Theater in Quarantine is live streaming its unique version of the 1925 silent horror film.
IMMERSIVE THEATER
- Drunk Dracula (The Ruby Theatre) — If imbibing is your thing, then look no further than this anything-goes, improv-heavy retelling of Bram Stoker’s novel, in which you’ll be taking shots with every mention of the vampiric count’s name, among other shenanigans.
- Masquerade (218 West 57th Street) — Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster musical returns to New York in the unlikeliest of forms — as an ambitiously immersive new production directed by Diane Paulus. Sleep No More has at last found a worthy successor.
CLASSICAL MUSIC
- Death of Classical (Various locations) — Andrew Ousley and the folks at Death of Classical have perfected the pairing of classical music and atmospheric, out-of-the-box locations like subterranean crypts and catacombs.
- New York Philharmonic: Psycho in Concert (Geffen Hall) — Experience this Alfred Hitchcock classic as you’ve never seen nor heard it before — with live scoring provided by the New York Philharmonic.
CABARET / NIGHTLIFE
- I Put a Spell on You: : ALiiVE at Webster Hall (Webster Hall) — A minted New York Halloween tradition, this year’s version of Jay Armstrong Johnson’s madcap Hocus Pocus-inspired concoction promises to be bigger and better than ever.
- The Bowery Boys: Ghost Stories of New York (Joe’s Pub) — The Bowery Boys Podcast have converted their live ghost stories show for the cabaret stage. Can this be the next New York Halloween tradition?
