Before it closed last weekend, I had a chance to take in the York Theatre Company’s revival of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Clark Gesner’s musical based on the beloved “Peanuts” comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz. The York presented the expanded version of the musical used in the 1999 revival (winning Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart Tonys), which features additional songs and dialogue by Andrew Lippa and Michael Mayer, respectively.
The main draw in director Michael Unger’s charming, intimately-scaled production – scenic design by Brian Prather, costume design by Grier Coleman – was that the cast was comprised completely of talented child actors, most of whom have top-tier Broadway and national tour experience on their resumes. Of particular note were Gregory Diaz as Schroeder (who possessed a sweet voice and an even sweeter presence in “Beethoven Day”), Milly Shapiro as Sally (so sassy and sweet in “My New Philosophy”), and Jeremy Villas as Linus (completely adorable in “My Blanket and Me” and a fabulous young dancer), each of whom exhibited true star quality despite their limited years. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for these talents.
